Inside the JBL Playback Tour: 80 Years of Sound, Superstars, and the Ultimate LA Road Trip

When you think about the soundtrack to your life, you usually think about the artists. But behind those artists is the engineering that actually brings the music to life. I recently had the incredible opportunity to get an exclusive, all-access look at 80 years of audio innovation during the JBL Playback Tour right here in Los Angeles.

From iconic recording studios to massive stadiums, here is a look inside the ultimate VIP sonic road trip.

1. Hitting the Road in the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid

Navigating Los Angeles traffic requires two things: a luxurious ride and an elite sound system. Luckily, I had both. For this tour, I was driving the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid, and to say I was impressed is an understatement.

Since 1998, Toyota and JBL engineers have teamed up to co-engineer custom, performance-level audio systems designed specifically for each vehicle’s cabin. Cranking up the volume in the Grand Highlander felt less like sitting in SUV traffic and more like having front-row seats at a live show. It set the perfect tone for the rest of the experience.

2. BMO Stadium: The Science of Scale

Our first official stop was the stunning BMO Stadium. If you’ve ever wanted to truly understand the sheer scale of JBL’s impact on global music culture, you have to look at it from the pitch. Standing on that empty field and looking up at the massive venue was a total core memory.

JBL actually powers over half of all movie theaters and a staggering 80% of live concerts and stadiums globally. Getting a behind-the-scenes look at the stadium’s acoustic engineering proved exactly why the world’s biggest artists trust this brand to deliver their sound to tens of thousands of fans at a time.

3. Larrabee Studios: Where Music Legends Live

Next, we shifted from massive stadium rock to the intimate, sacred spaces where music history is written: the legendary Larrabee Studios in North Hollywood.

Walking into Larrabee is like walking into a time capsule of pop culture greatness. This studio is practically dripping in GRAMMY wins. It’s the space where Michael Jackson recorded, and yes—I even got to stand right next to Elton John’s actual studio piano.

Seeing where the magic happens and checking out the professional JBL reference monitors built into the studio walls really connected the dots. The exact same audio clarity the pros use to mix global hits is what JBL and Toyota engineered directly into the dash of the Grand Highlander.

4. An Unforgettable Night at The Roxy (Featuring FINNEAS)

The pinnacle of the trip was the official 80th Anniversary celebration at the legendary Roxy Theatre on Sunset Blvd. After a beautiful group dinner at Darling Restaurant, we headed into the venue for a night of pure energy.

Australia’s own DJ Tigerlily completely brought the house down, spinning an electric set that showed off the vibrant, high-energy side of the brand. But the absolute highlight of the night? A surprise appearance and performance by FINNEAS.

Hearing him perform a few tracks in such an intimate, historic room was unforgettable. Having him walk right past my spot on the floor was just the icing on the cake.

5. A Walk Through Time at the HARMAN Archives

We wrapped up our epic three-day experience by heading to the HARMAN Global Centre of Acoustic Excellence in Northridge for the official Playback Gallery tour.

This was a literal walk through time. We got a guided walkthrough of everything from a replica of founder James B. Lansing’s original 1946 living room setups all the way to the boundary-pushing tech of today. Seeing how their innovations shaped everything from Woodstock to the Olympics gave me a whole new appreciation for the science of sound.

After a final lunch and checking out of the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt, it was time to head home.

A massive thank you to Toyota and JBL for having me out. It was an incredible reminder of what it truly means to live life at full volume.
