Why Parents of Little Ones Need to See “Adolescence”

As a mom of three amazing, energetic boys (all six and under!), I’m constantly learning on this wild parenting ride. Recently, I watched a new Netflix series called “Adolescence” and it has truly stuck with me. I honestly think it’s SO important for all parents, especially those of young kids, to check it out.

Now, before you think, “My kids are too little for this,” trust me! “Adolescence” isn’t just about teenagers; it’s about the entire journey of childhood and the subtle (and not-so-subtle) influences shaping our kids long before those turbulent teen years.

The series follows a 13-year-old boy accused of a serious crime, diving into the complexities of his life, family, and the world around him. What hit me hardest was how it illuminated the pressures and hidden battles our children might be facing, even when they seem happy and carefree.

Here are some key takeaways from “Adolescence” that I think are vital for us parents of young children to consider:

  • The Digital World Starts Sooner Than We Think: Even if our littles aren’t on social media yet, they’re absorbing the culture. This series highlights how online interactions can deeply affect self-esteem. It made me realize the importance of early convos about online safety and critical thinking. Let’s be proactive in understanding their future digital landscape! 📱
  • Communication is Key, Even When It’s Hard: The parents in the show were loving, but there were gaps in understanding. It reminded me that even as busy parents, we need consistent, open communication with our kids, even when they’re young. Open-ended questions, truly listening, and creating a safe space for all their feelings can make a huge difference. ❤️
  • Understanding the Pressure on Boys: This series particularly shed light on societal expectations placed on young boys. Even in elementary school, harmful norms can creep in. It underscored teaching our sons healthy emotional expression, respect, empathy, and that vulnerability is strength. Let’s actively counter toxic messages! 💪
  • We Don’t Know Everything: As parents, we want to protect our kids and think we know them inside and out. But “Adolescence” shows there can be hidden struggles. It’s a powerful reminder to stay curious, observant, and humble about our understanding. Let’s be constant learners alongside them. 🤔
  • Early Intervention and Awareness: While the series deals with a serious teen situation, it made me think about the importance of early intervention. By being attuned to their emotional well-being and social interactions from a young age, we can potentially address issues before they escalate. Let’s be aware of bullying and foster resilience early on. 🌱

“Adolescence” is a gripping and thought-provoking series that, while intense, offers valuable insights for parents of children of all ages. It’s a reminder that the foundations we lay now are crucial. It definitely made me reflect on my own parenting and how I can better support my boys.

I highly recommend finding the time to watch “Adolescence” on Netflix. It might spark important conversations and give you a deeper understanding of the challenges our kids face, even in their seemingly innocent early years. Let’s all strive to be informed, communicative, and supportive parents as our kids navigate their journey! What are your thoughts? 👇
