Basic CPR Tips for Moms with 9-1-1 on Fox and The Resident

This post is sponsored by FOX and SheKnows Media.

As a mother, there are a million books and blogs gushing information on how to properly care for your baby. But there are a few must-know facts and preventions that can literally save a life! CPR, safe sleeping positions and choking or airway disruption can be seen as scary, but knowing how to take action can make it less intimidating and keep you prepared. September is National Preparedness Month, so it only makes sense that the 2-Night Premiere Event of 9-1-1 on FOX falls on September 23rd & 24th at 9/8c while The Resident premieres on September 24th at 8/7c only. These lifesaving shows teamed up with Richard Pass of Save a Little Life to keep new and experienced mommies informed on how to handle scary situations with their children. Moms to the Rescue!

According to Pass, CPR is “an oxygen bridge for life.” It can be the first action in saving someone.

Some basics to remember:

-30 pumps to the chest with two fingers between the nipples of an infant. Pump to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees (100-120 pumps/min)

-2 Rescue breaths in between pumps

Another point Pass touched on was safe sleeping for your infant. While your baby is an infant, swaddling keeps them snug as a bug. But, when your baby shows signs of rolling, it is important to let them be free. If they roll over, they will be able to use their arms to keep their head up, preventing any blankets or loose sheets from obstructing their breathing.

As your babe passes the rolling phase and moves into the mobile stage, it is important to know how to relieve them of an obstructed airway. One way is to face the baby at a downward angle with their face facing down and one hand supporting their chest. With the other hand, slap between their shoulder blades five times and then flip them over onto their back and push between the nipples on their chest five times. Then check the mouth to see what they swallowed.

With all this information, I felt prepared and knowledgeable on how to rescue my baby! The Resident and 9-1-1 on FOX not only deal with first responder situations requiring CPR – among other things – they are also faced with heart-stopping situations that require much more quick thinking than I’m sure I could handle!

As you know, I’m a huge fan of both shows and was lucky enough to interview Oliver Stark from 9-1-1 on FOX this past March, so I can’t wait to catch the Season 2 premiere! I hope you’ll watch with me!
